PPWR Is Here: What Every Food Exporter to Europe Needs to Know

Are you ready for the new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation?

The PPWR is the EU's new packaging law designed to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability, and create a more sustainable packaging system across all EU Member States. Unlike previous legislation, this regulation applies directly across the European Union and affects businesses placing packaged products on the EU market, including exporters from outside Europe.

Why Should Exporters Care?

Many exporters believe PPWR only affects packaging manufacturers. It doesn't.

If you sell packaged food in the EU, your products may need to meet new packaging requirements. These rules can influence:

  • The packaging materials you use

  • Product labeling and packaging information

  • Packaging design and recyclability

  • Documentation requested by your European customers

  • Future market access

Ignoring these changes could lead to delays, increased costs, customer concerns, or even difficulties placing products on the EU market as more requirements take effect.

The Biggest Risk Is Waiting Too Long

Many of the PPWR requirements will be introduced in stages over the coming years, but the regulation has already entered into force and its first provisions begin applying from 12 August 2026. Businesses that prepare early will have more time to work with suppliers, update packaging where necessary, and avoid last-minute disruptions.

The companies that start preparing today will be in a much stronger position than those who wait until customers begin asking questions.
